Shani cover - MADNESS!!!

So I've been working on a Shani the Wanderer cover.  This is what I've done:

It's cool, yeah?  I think so.  I was trying to attempt a Buscema-Conan style, you know, SAVAGE Sword of Conan.  The black and white stuff.  By no means did I reach Buscema level but I think it'll be a cool style to play with.

Let me share some process.

I started with a sketch in my sketchbook.

A lot of red pencil, a lot of tears a lot of complaining, a lot of fighting, blood, screaming, sadness, anger, acceptance...

... then!

I got a viable cover.  It does what I want it to do, but I wasn't completely happy.

MORE SKETCHING!

Ugh!  I can't get it to do what I want it to do!  I did a bunch of page sketches.  Until I get this:

This was done on a letter sized piece of paper and tightened up with some good ol' onion skin (ahem... tracing paper).

I tightened it up so I can ink.  I also fixed the soldier who's getting stabbed (for better or for worse).

INK TIME!  I started inking.

INK!  INK!  INK!

INK INK INK INK!!!!

 ... And done!

I did some craziness with crosshatching and feathering in this picture that if I just drew it straight and used more black it would have taken less time.

Craziness like this:

... aaaand this:

... aaaand this!

This was a ton of fun.  I'm going to color it next which I'll be posting later.

This book will be coming out in July, just so you know, so stay tuned for more!

Later Gators!

Shani the Wanderer

Yeah...

It's been a little while.

I've been getting all my ducks in a row so the new Bloody Pulp Magazine can go out sooner than later.

Guess what I did.  I got together with writer extraordinaire Phillip Lee McCall to help me develop a new character for the relaunch of the mag and we came up with -- SHANI THE WANDERER!

She's an amazon warrior of mixed heritage who sets out to find an item of great power and has many adventures along the way.

We've got some sketches of her (while still in the development stages, I'm quite happy with) and a few action shots of her with sword, shield and spear.

Stay tuned for more information or go check out Phillip's website for info on Shani and a bunch of his other creations.

Enjoy!

Bloody Pulp Magazine

Hi All!  Leigh here...

It's strange to start a new Bloody Pulp Magazine blog post after all these years but... HERE IT IS!

I recently bought the domain from my friend and fellow BloodyPulper, Jeremy Jusay and decided to try and take the magazine in a new-ish direction. Sorta...

In the years since BPM#1, the indy comics world has seemed to exploded.  I've done a bunch of comic projects with a bunch of different people, I've tabled at a few cons and gotten my name out there a little bit (not as much as I should have, mind you) and I always thought about my love for BPM#1; what I consider to be my cherry-poppin' moment and where I want it to go after what is NOW 5 years since we got it printed.

This blog is a harbinger of what's to come.  I'm going to post artwork and maybe sketches of projects I consider to be BPM-worthy.  I'm hoping to get stuff from the other two OG BPM-ers, Glenn Urieta and Jeremy Jusay, as well as some new stuff from new people I want to get involved in the "project."  But first thing's first...  WELCOME, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, TO B-P-M!
